An actual conversation today as I was checking out of the grocery store:
Him (taking my card): "Bonjour!"
Me: "Bonjour! Comment t'allez-vous?"
Him (ringing me up): "Nein."
Me (shrugging): "De nada."
Him (bagging and loading): "Aloha!"
Me (signing and leaving): "Shalom!"
It made me smile and laugh a little, a ray of sunshine on an otherwise difficult day. It's moments like this that remind me that everyday people are good, that humor helps and that ordinary acts of kindness and fun are necessary to survive terrible tragedies.
May we always remember lest we forget.
