Love for the Secondary Characters: Filly

I was going through my old files (of which there are so so many) and stumbled across this little clip from INVISIBLE, which underscored one of the many reasons I love Filly:

“There’s a song, but it’s unimportant, and a ritual bath, which is even less important, but the one thing that you must do is give up something of yourself—something yours, something permanent—in order to bind your Name.” She straightened the horsehead pendant at her throat. “All true magic demands a sacrifice. And it must be done, as they say, willingly, sealed with a drop of blood”
“A sacrifice?” Joy said and shuddered. “Like what? A goat?”
Filly snorted. “Don’t be ridiculous! What would a binding spell want with a goat?” she said. “It has to be your sacrifice. Something uniquely yours. The color of your eyes. A year of your life. Your firstborn child. Your voice. Your fears..”
Joy started. “You can sacrifice fears?”
“A foolish price,” Filly said dismissively. “Without fear, what remains to keep you safe? What motivates you to overcome adversity, to seek out adventure, to step out the door? Without a healthy dose of fear, you are nothing but a reckless fool with little thought of consequence.”
Joy thought about Monica in her hospital bed and cringed.

** Just a reminder that you should love your secondary characters as much as your main character because the truth is, every character is the heroine of her own story and they aren't so much window dressing as worlds onto themselves.
